‘93 was the year after the Olympics. The buzz about speed skiing was strong and high. We were still part of the US Ski Team and racing on the official World Cup. In Les Arcs, Kazanaga Kasumi had just come down and set a new world record, but the race wasn’t finished. I came down after him and had one of the funniest moments in my speed skiing career. I set a new world record. There were about 50 school kids around me but there was still one racer to go, Philippe Goitschelwho got the silver in the Olympics. So, for my moment of holding a world record, I was surrounded by kids who wanted autographs and then Goitschelcame and I was left standing alone because they all left me to swamp him because he was the new world record holder and I was now the second fastest skier in the world – and proud of it.
